Rochester, NY (USA). (June 2, 2017) – Acuity Polymers, Inc. is proud to announce US FDA clearance of the Acuity 58 (enflufocon B) Gas Permeable (GP) contact lens and the Acuity 85 (oprifocon A) Gas Permeable contact lens. Acuity 58 and Acuity 85 GP Lenses will be available soon from custom contact lens laboratories in the US and across the world.

Since December 2016, Acuity Polymers has received FDA 510(k) clearances for four GP materials (hyper, Dk, high Dk, medium Dk, and lower Dk).  By the end of the year, the company hopes to have a 5th material approved.  Most of the US custom laboratories have qualified as alternate manufacturing sites for Acuity Polymers GP contact lenses.  The company has joined the Contact Lens Manufacturers Association (CLMA) to support the great work being carried out by the GP Lens Institute (GPLI).  It is also a member of the European Federation of the Contact Lens and IOL Industries (EFCLIN).

Acuity Polymers, Inc. was launched last year to develop latheable polymers for use in specialty contact lenses, both rigid and soft.  The company was founded by three industry colleagues all connected through their experiences in specialty contact lenses.  Jim Bonafini is a polymer chemist who started his contact lens industry experience at Polymer Technology Corporation (PTC) in Wilmington MA before moving to Rochester to work for Bausch & Lomb (B&L). Dan Bell, up until recently the owner of Corneal Design, a custom GP lab in Maryland, started his contact lens career as an engineer with B&L. Jonathan Jacobson is a commercial leader with thirty years combined experience working at PTC, B&L, and Menicon Company.

The company’s vision it to become the leading innovator in the space of specialty contact lens materials, lens care, and lens surface enhancement technology.  “We see significant opportunities to improve and enhance on what’s already available and to bring back to this segment a spirit of competition and innovation to improve patients’ experience with specialty lenses”, said Jonathan Jacobson, CEO and Commercial Vice President.  “Advances in lathing technology, diagnostic instrumentation, lens design software, and the role of lenses as more than vision correction devices are pushing the limits of existing materials and demanding new breakthroughs in lens polymer development and post production enhancements”, added Jim Bonafini, President and COO of Acuity Polymers.  The company’s GP materials are branded Acuity and the current offerings are Acuity 100, Acuity 85, Acuity 58, and Acuity 18.
